Tarradarrapin Bushcare

The Tarradarrapin Bushcare group meets once a month and is dedicated to improving the water quality of the wetlands and preserving the native fauna and flora.

It is important that the waterways remain healthy as the water from Tarradarrapin leads directly into the bay.

Participating in the Tarradarrapin Bushcare group allows member to assist with:

  • water quality monitoring programs;
  • weed removal and identification;
  • tree planting;
  • spotlighting and social activities;
  • fauna and flora monitoring programs;
  • developing plans to establish bushwalking tracks, bird hides and board walks within the wetland.

Volunteers are asked to please wear closed-in shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bring a water bottle.

Bushcare isn't just about preserving the environment, but it is also about social interaction and community fun.

Water:

Regular monitoring of the Tarradarrapin Wetlands has shown the water to be slightly acidic with high concentrations of ammonia, nitrates, organic nitrogen and phosphorus, as well as low concentrations of dissolved oxygen.

Contaminants such as oil, household rubbish, bottles and plastic bags have entered the wetlands via the stormwater drain or by irresponsible dumping.

Constant monitoring of the water quality allows the Tarradarrapin Bushcare Convenor to take appropriate action and reduce the threat to the wildlife that resides in the water of these wetlands - swordfish, eels, turtles and water birds, to name just a few.
